Cornell University Library invites you to the opening lecture celebrating the new fall exhibition “Book-Objects and Artist Books,” the work of distinguished book artist Werner Pfeiffer. A sculptor, printmaker, and painter, Pfeiffer is known for his provocative works of art that offer insightful reflection on the role of physical books in the twenty-first century. He will discuss his art, from the deconstructed book to the censorship of books, and how the electronic environment has influenced the resurgence of the handmade book. During his talk, he will recreate one of his well-known pieces, the six-foot-tall, three-dimensional book “Out of the Sky,” honoring the victims of the World Trade Center towers in New York City.

Born in Stuttgart, Germany, in 1937, Werner Pfeiffer has lived in the United States since 1961. He was appointed Professor of Art at Pratt Institute in New York City in 1969. His books, collages, drawings, prints, paintings, and sculptures have been shown internationally in nearly 200 group and solo exhibitions.

The exhibition will be on view until February 25, 2011.

The exhibition and associated events are made possible by the Stephen E. and Evalyn Edwards Milman Exhibition Fund.

Free and open to all.
